The 8 Best Ways You Can Be Helping Wildlife Right Now
Canadian Wildlife is facing extinction at an alarming rate. How can you help protect our species?
Here are the 8 best ways you can help by implementing small changes to your daily life.
1) Educate Yourself on the Endangered Wildlife that Surrounds You.
I think the first step to helping the wildlife that surrounds you is by learning about it. Ecosystems are very different; therefore, learning about the different species that live around you is key to knowing how to help them! Once you have gained some good insights, you can let people around you know what to do and what not to do to protect wildlife.
2) Volunteer to help Wildlife in the Area You Live in.
In Canada, Wildlife refuges and parks are often home to so many endangered wildlife species. After learning about the endangered wildlife that surrounds you, you can volunteer at those places to help protect the animals. Yes, one person does make a huge difference!
3) Make Sure your Home is not a Hazard to Wildlife.
There are several things you can do to ensure your home is not a hazard to the Wildlife that surrounds you. Firstly, being more cautious of how much water you use can help ensure there are enough local water reserves for the wildlife. Secondly, you can make sure you secure your trash to prevent animals from coming in contact with potential harsh components. Thirdly, you can install window decals to ensure birds don't collide with your windows and get hurt.
4) Planting Native Flora in your Home.
Planting native flora such as Butterflyweed and Wild Bergamot are considered a natural source of food for the Wildlife that lives around you. Considering our food industry leaves species without a source of nutrition, you can help by ensuring they have easier access to food.
5) Avoid Using Toxic Herbicides and Pesticides.
Although it is tempting to do whatever it takes to achieve an aesthetically pleasing garden/lawn look, some of the herbicides and pesticides such as Glyphosate are very polluting to the environment and pose great danger to the wildlife. Sunday Weed Warrior is an effective and organic weed killer that is considered safe.
6) Drive Safely.
Sometimes living in rural areas means speeding on empty roads. However, roads in rural areas are a hazard to the wildlife. If you are driving on a road that is known as one where wildlife usually crosses, make sure to drive slowly to protect any living beings around you!
7) Recycle and Buy Recycled Products.
Do not underestimate the power of recycling and buying recycled products! It is so important to be a conscious buyer and educate yourself on where material is sourced from before you make a purchase decision. This can go a long way in helping out the Wildlife that surrounds you. In terms of recycling, it is easier than you think. You could simply start by informing yourself on whether or not your community has a curb-side pickup program. If that is not the case, you would simply need to drop off your recycled products to the nearest recycling center to you.
8) Support Ethical Wildlife Parks.
I know this might sound controversial. Hear me out though! I know that holding animals in captivity is frowned upon, and most of the time, I do agree with that. However, some Wildlife parks actually help Wildlife grow in populations and do a great job at educating humans on how to protect the species they are seeing. BC Wildlife Park is a great example of an ethical Wildlife Park which you can visit without feeling guilty!
